Poor cylinder contribution at idle does not always originate from fuel delivery.
Some diesel engines use intake-swirl control to influence air movement inside the cylinder under specific operating conditions.
A fault in this system can produce symptoms that resemble an injector imbalance.
Combustion Depends on Air Motion
Fuel atomization is only one part of mixture formation.
Air movement can also influence:
- fuel distribution;
- combustion speed;
- low-load stability.
Some engines use variable intake geometry, swirl flaps or similar systems to control this behavior.
Why Low Speed Can Reveal the Fault
A swirl-control problem may be more noticeable at:
- idle;
- low engine speed;
- light load.
At higher airflow, the effect may become less obvious.
That operating pattern provides useful diagnostic direction.
Commanded Position Is Not Physical Position
