Diesel starting depends on more than starter rotation.
The ECU, injector drivers, sensors and fuel-control actuators must also receive sufficient electrical supply while the starter motor is drawing heavy current.
Resting Voltage and Cranking Voltage Are Different Tests
A battery may show an acceptable open-circuit reading.
Once the starter is energized:
high current draw → voltage drops
The important question is how much usable voltage remains at the control systems.
Measure More Than the Battery
Useful checks can include:
- battery voltage at rest;
- battery voltage during cranking;
- ECU supply during cranking;
- ground-side voltage drop;
- positive cable voltage drop.
Why the Engine Can Still Crank
The starter may continue turning while control-system voltage becomes too low for reliable electronic operation.
